Semen Collection of Murrah Buffalo to Start From Poush for Cross Breeding

Semen collection of Murra Buffaloo, brought for breed improvement from Indja, will be started from Poush.

Dr. Jagdish Pandey, Head of the National Animal Breeding Office and Animal Development Officer in Pokhara, said that since the cattle brought from outside must be kept in quarantine for at least 21 days, semen will be collected only from Poush.

He said that animals should be about two and a half years old to collect semen. The age of Murra Buffaloo brought from India is 24 months to 28 months.

According to him, at one time, 250 doses of semen will be collected from one Murra Ranga. Semen will be collected twice a week. He said that the revenue of 25 rupees should be paid to the government for 1 dose of semen. Farmers have to pay a revenue of Rs 25 when they go to the government center for artificial insemination of cattle.

There are 1,950 active associations that provide artificial insemination. He says that it is impossible to say how much money it will cost when they go to the farmer’s house and perform artificial insemination.

The government got some unwanted attention from the public after they got the information that India will gift Murraa Buffaloo to Nepal following Prime Minister Prachanda’s visit to India. It also became a meme materail for netizens where Prachanda was pronouncing the Murra Buffaloo.

However, Nepali farmers are happy with this gift as it will help the cattle to produce more milk. Murrah is a special type of Indian Buffalo breed which has the highest milk production capacity of up to 35 kg in a day.
