“Waste management in the valley is being done in a very marginal type. It can also be stopped at any time. It may stop tomorrow.”, he said.

At present, waste from two metropolitan cities and 16 municipalities in Kathmandu Valley is dumped at Bancharedanda landfill site in Dhading. About 1200 metric tons of garbage is dumped there every day. Mayor Maharjan said that 65 percent of the garbage dumped there is from Kathmandu Metropolitan City and 19 percent from Lalitpur.

The government has built an infrastructure in Bancharedanda to dispose of garbage in Kathmandu Valley. But there is a risk that the infrastructure designed for 50 years will not last even 10 years if the decaying and non-decaying waste is not managed properly, he said.

He further criticized Balen for not approaching with the sustainable way to manage the waste. “No answer has been recceieved of the file to manage the waste in sustainable manner by the Kathmandu metropolis. As the file is stuck there, our goal to manage the waste is also stucked,” he added.

Waste management has arised as one of the most serious challanges in the Kathmandu Valley. Citizens of Kathmandu and Banchare Danda has always faces problems due to the unmanaged stle of waste management.
