In Damak, Jhapa, the municipality has officially banned the playing of Carrom board and Ludo in public areas.
Mayor Ram Kumar Thapa said the ban was enforced because people were starting to play these games with a “win or lose” mindset — turning friendly games into gambling. According to him, some players were even betting large amounts of money, which raised concerns in the community.
This issue was discussed in an all-party meeting, and officials decided to take action. The mayor said the ban is meant to protect children and maintain peace in the neighbourhoods, as these games were being played loudly in shops and on the streets.
The municipality has released a public notice, and municipal police have been mobilized to make sure the ban is followed. If anyone is found ignoring the rule, action will be taken.
Not everyone is happy about the decision — some locals have opposed the ban, saying carrom and ludo are just fun games, not gambling.
But the municipality says the step was taken after discussions with local police and administration, and they are determined to strictly implement it.
