Binge Rewatch Alert: Everything You Need to Know About Nepali Origin Actress in GOT

Forget Jon Snow brooding on the Wall or Daenerys conquering with dragons. Game of Thrones held a secret jewel, a hidden gem hailing from the majestic mountains of Nepal.

Think back to all the amazing characters in Game of Thrones. Fierce warriors, cunning queens, lovable dragons… But did you know a hidden gem of Nepali origin graced the Seven Kingdoms? That’s right, a true treasure from the foothills of the Himalayas journeyed all the way to Westeros!

Remember Irri, the handmaiden to Daenerys Targaryen? That talented young woman with wise words and calming strength? Well, Irri was brought to life by the brilliant Amrita Acharia (yes Acharia not Acharya), an actress with roots in Nepal! Though her screen time may not have been as vast as some, Acharia’s presence added a touch of cultural richness and quiet power to the show.

Born in Kathmandu, Nepal, and later raised in London, Acharia brings a unique blend of Eastern grace and Western grit to her performances. She’s not just about acting, either. Acharia is a passionate advocate for education and has actively worked to rebuild schools in her homeland. Talk about a true queen, both on and off screen! She is an ambassador for the charity ChoraChori, which works to rescue displaced and trafficked Nepali children from India.

So next time you rewatch Game of Thrones, keep an eye out for Irri. See the strength in her gaze, the wisdom in her voice. Remember, she represents not just a skilled handmaiden, but a testament to the talent and diversity that flows from all corners of the world, even from the majestic mountains of Nepal!

Acharia’s character Irri was killed off in the middle of Season 2, even though the character Irri is alive as of the end of the fifth novel. At the time, it was reported that Acharia had to leave production on the TV series because she wasn’t able to obtain Norwegian citizenship (even though most of her family has it), and thus wasn’t about to extend her EU work visa. Amrita recently did an AMA thread on Reddit in which she stated that this was not the reason her character was killed off, instead saying that the writers know what they are doing and that she does still in fact have an EU work visa.

And who knows, maybe one day this hidden gem will shine even brighter, taking on starring roles and captivating audiences with her own Westerosi tales. Keep your eyes peeled, because Amrita Acharia’s adventure is just beginning!

She also has a small number of stage and screen roles to her name, most notably an appearance in the play Elevator, a role in the short film In the Company of Wolves and a brief role in the British drama series Casualty. Yet, she is best known for her roles as Irri in the HBO series Game of Thrones and as Dr. Ruby Walker in the ITV series The Good Karma Hospital.

Acharia is also a trained dancer, which explains Irri’s graceful movements and poise!
