Pint of Beer a Day, Keeps Doctor Away!

Red wine is well known for its heart-health benefits. But do you know what health benefits beer has to offer? Researchers have discovered that people who drank about a pint of beer per day had a 31% lower risk of heart disease. Cheers to that!

The study, published in the European Journal of Epidemiology, is an analysis of 16 studies involving over 200,000 participants. Researchers discovered that people who drank about a pint of beer per day had a 31% lower risk of heart disease. According to MyHealthNewsDaily, for those who consumed more alcohol, whether beer, wine, or liquor, their risk “surged.” Research Laboratories at the Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura “Giovanni Paolo I” in Campobasso, Italy, carried out the study.

“Alcohol in moderation can increase your HDL or good cholesterol,” American Dietetic Association registered dietician Andrea Giancoli explained. “The higher your HDL, the better your protection against heart disease.”

Giancoli also mentioned that beer may have some advantages that wine does not have. Beer contains more water, which is more filling and thus helps some people moderate their alcohol consumption.

While the findings are encouraging for beer drinkers, the researchers issued a strong warning.

“We’re talking about moderate and regular drinking,” lead researcher Augusto Di Castelnuovo explained. “I believe we can never emphasize this enough. Wine and beer are part of a way of life. One glass can be paired with healthy foods and consumed at the appropriate time, perhaps with family or friends. Binge drinking and other forms of excessive consumption have no place here.”
