During the annual celebration program of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Prime Minister Prachanda and Mayor Balen of Kathmandu Metropolitan City shared the stage. In his congratulatory speech, Mayor Balen sought the Prime Minister’s assistance in addressing legal issues related to waste management and the removal of slums encroaching on the river.
Mayor Balen asserted that local authorities could handle encroachments on their own and expressed urgency in resolving the river encroachment issue, suggesting it could be swiftly addressed if the Prime Minister and the home minister were willing. However, Prachanda voiced displeasure, highlighting that individuals often speak hastily and then leave without hearing the response. Despite the momentary tension, Balen walked away.
In response, Prachanda acknowledged his proactive efforts in addressing river encroachment, Tinkune’s compensation, and waste management discussions at Singha Durbar. He expressed frustration, stating that despite his initiatives, he did not receive the cooperation he expected.
Prachanda questioned why the Mayor couldn’t appreciate the positive strides made by the Prime Minister in issues like Bagmati interference, Tinkune, or garbage management. He emphasized the importance of recognizing positive efforts and expressed the pain of not receiving such acknowledgment.
Having completed a year as Prime Minister, Prachanda expressed his desire to work in a new way and sought support from everyone for his future endeavors.
